The Memphis Ice Files: What 47 Years of Serving Memphis Has Taught Us
When Robert Halfacre founded Memphis Ice in 1977, Memphis looked a lot different than it does today. The downtown skyline was different. The restaurant scene was different. The technology was different. But one thing has never changed: businesses in the Mid-South need reliable ice machines and refrigeration equipment, as well as a partner they can trust to keep it all running.
Nearly five decades later, Memphis Ice is still here. Still family owned. Grown to serve a 150-mile radius of Memphis. And still showing up the same way Robert Halfacre did when he started it all.
So what have we learned in 47 years? Quite a bit, actually.
Relationships Are Everything
If there is one thing nearly five decades in business will teach you, it is that the relationships you build matter more than anything else. We have customers who have been with us since the beginning. We have watched businesses grow from a single location to multiple locations across the Mid-South. We have been there when they opened their first doors, new doors, and we have been there when they needed us most.
Those relationships do not happen by accident. They are built one service call at a time, one honest conversation at a time, one problem solved at a time. We do not take a single one of them for granted.
Showing Up Is Half the Battle
It sounds simple, but in our experience it is one of the most important things a service company can do. Show up when you say you will. Call when you say you will call. Do what you say you are going to do. In an industry where equipment failures can bring a business to a standstill, reliability is not just a nice quality to have. It is the whole job.
Over the years we have built our reputation on being the company that shows up. Not just when it is convenient, but when it counts.
Prevention Is Always Better Than a Crisis
One of the biggest lessons we have learned from working with hundreds of Mid-South businesses is that the customers who invest in preventative maintenance almost always have fewer emergencies. A well-maintained ice machine lasts longer, runs more efficiently, and is far less likely to break down on the busiest night of the year.
We have seen what happens when maintenance gets skipped. We have also seen what happens when it does not. The difference is significant, and it almost always comes down to having a plan and sticking to it.
The Mid-South Is a Community Worth Serving
We are not a national chain. We are not a faceless corporation. We are a family-owned business that has been part of the Memphis community for going on five decades, and that means something to us. The businesses we serve are our neighbors. Their customers are our neighbors. When we help a restaurant keep its doors open or help a healthcare facility keep its equipment running, we are contributing to something bigger than a service call.
That sense of community is woven into everything we do. It is why we treat our customers the way we do, why we take pride in the work our technicians put in every day, and why we have never lost sight of what this business is really about.
The Next Generation
When Clark Lawrence took over Memphis Ice as the third-generation owner, he did not just inherit a business. He inherited a legacy. A legacy built by his grandfather Robert Halfacre, carried forward by his uncles, Jeff and Bobby Halfacre, and his mother, Betsy Friedl. They trusted him to grow and protect it.
That kind of continuity is rare in any industry. It speaks to the strength of the foundation that was laid in 1977 and the commitment of everyone who has contributed to Memphis Ice along the way. We do not take that lightly. Every customer we serve, every machine we install, and every service call we make is an extension of that legacy.
Thank You, Memphis
To every customer who has trusted Memphis Ice over the past 47 years, thank you. Thank you for calling us when something went wrong. Thank you for letting us be part of your story. Thank you for recommending us to your neighbors and your fellow business owners. You are the reason we are still here and the reason we show up every single day.
We also want to thank our team. The technicians, the office staff, and everyone who has worn a Memphis Ice shirt and given this company their best. Some of our team members have been with us for decades, and their loyalty to this business is something we do not take for granted. They are the ones who make every promise we make to our customers possible, and Memphis Ice would not be what it is without them.
We are not done yet. Not by a long shot. If you are looking for a reliable ice machine and refrigeration partner in the Mid-South, we would love to earn your trust the same way we have earned the trust of our customers since 1977.
Give us a call at 901-235-3760 or reach out online. We would be honored to serve you.
